Oscar Pistorius Injured In Prison Fight Over A Phone
Officials from correctional services have confirmed that Oscar Pistorius was mildly injured after a prison fight ensued between him and a fellow inmate.
The Paralympian allegedly started a fight with another inmate while waiting to use a pay phone.
The Correctional Services Department confirmed this, saying it will investigate the incident and ensure appropriate action is taken if necessary.
Officials say the fight between Pistorius and a fellow inmate started over the use of a public phone in the special care unit of the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre where both are serving time.
Pistorius, who had his murder sentence more than doubled last month, was queuing to use the phone at the Correctional Centre, near Pretoria, when he reportedly began fighting with an inmate.
A few blows later, Pistorius reportedly ‘sustained a bruise’ during the altercation which happened on December 6.
While this may sound ordinary in prison, the fight could see Pistorius lose privileges such as access to the jail tuck shop and the phone that started the fight.
Though Pistorius, 31, is still classified as ‘low risk’, this may be re-classified if an investigation finds that he was the one who started the fight.
According to prison officials, it is standard operating procedure regarding cases of alleged assaults for an internal investigation into the matter to be set up.
This will allow them to establish the facts and to ensure that appropriate action is taken against those involved. The brawl came just days after the blade runner’s prison term was extended by the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Oscar Pistorius had his sentence for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29, increased to 13 years last month aftera successful appeal by prosecutors.
The Supreme Court ruling was widely welcomed by South Africans including his victim’s family.
